catch-up

Gah, so much for the foodie posts on Cincinnati*, the California whirlwind**, the market visit with Kolz's relatives***, the New York apartment-shedding adventure****, my first bar mitzvah celebration *****...

Here in Detroit, there is work to be done before the London conference in two weeks, the Wings are in the finals, Kolz is coming out of a fever that hit him yesterday with the sort of speed you expect only in kids under 5. (Kids under five being scarier, no doubt, but I'm fine if our fevers stay under 102 from now on, thanks). It is sunny, the Air Race is this weekend, and...

it is now time for TOMATO WATCH!!!

Meet my hope, my dream, my Husky Cherry Red, that greeted us with two actual baby tomatoes upon our return from Albany on Sunday. It's my first foray into vegetables (excluding herbs) that will hopefully produce bountifully enough that I have to stake it and give away the 'maters. My herbs in various pots are already doing me very proud - basil and thyme abounding, Greek oregano, bonkers Italian parsley, leggy chives, mint already sending out runners in its little pot, and some very determined rosemary. It is already proving more economical, and much nicer, to pluck from the balcony rather than buy more than I could use from the grocery store in plastic. Cooking is more fun and spontaneous as well! Grow your own indeed!

* In sum: order the pork belly, and anything over "creamy polenta", and shred your brussel sprouts finely and cook them with pancetta.

** Nephew Jakers is big, niece Sophers is bigger, the drive up 280 is still epic and beautiful to me, Craiggers is a doctor, Kolz's sis is a rabbi, and I got back on the In'n'Out wagon.

*** Memorial Day weekend is planting season, and folks are out for your knees and shins, dragging their little wagons full of impatiens and begonias around...but the outdoor karaoke is heating up.

**** Advice: screen your subletters for their inclination to deep-fry, lest you end up with an insanely greasy-dusty slick on your less-often-cleaned household surfaces 9 months later. Also: movers will screw you, no matter how hard you try to avoid it. Also: having only 1 apartment is really nice.

***** SO FUN.
